Place-based clues for family-history research.

SearchingZips presents community-level estimates that can help you explore the places and identities connected to a family story. Pair these clues with family records, oral histories, and other research about your own relatives.

Heritage, ancestry, and Indigenous communities

The named community list brings together detailed Hispanic-origin categories (B03001), reported ancestries (B04006), and named Indigenous people categories (B02020) for exploration. These estimates describe communities; they are not combined into a single population total. Parent groups and unspecified categories remain outside the named-community list.

Race and ethnicity have separate views

Race, Hispanic origin, detailed Asian identities, and other population measures each have their own view. They use different definitions and denominators, so each is presented separately.

Country of birth is presented as context

Country and territory of birth appear in a separate view from heritage and ancestry. Grouped regions are also separate from individual countries.

Shares and rankings

Each ranking compares the same source measure across available ZIP records. Share calculations use the denominator supplied for that measure. Ties share a rank. Zero estimates and missing observations remain distinct, and margins of error appear where supplied.

Source and geography

Population estimates come from the 2024 American Community Survey five-year release (2020–2024). The search index includes 39,487 ZIP records. Some Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas do not have a direct postal ZIP match; unmatched records are not relabeled as postal ZIPs.
